The passio of the deacon Vincent under Dacian — gridiron, dungeon, and the sea — already preached from by Augustine, whose sermons prove an early written account existed.

Valerius the bishop, being of impeded speech, spoke through his deacon; and Vincent answered for the church of Saragossa before Dacian — the bishop was sent into exile, the deacon to the torments from which he took his crown.
