Antipas of Pergamum

d. c. 92 (trad., under Domitian) · “My faithful martyr” of Pergamum · Pergamum

The Apostolic Fathers

Who Antipas of Pergamum was

The only individual martyr named in the book of Revelation: “even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth” — Pergamum, city of the great altar and the imperial cult’s Asian seat. The verse is the whole primary record; tradition supplies an episcopate under John and death in a brazen bull under Domitian, hagiography’s furniture around scripture’s single grave sentence. In him the word martys completes its journey from “witness” to “martyr.”

Verified single attestation

Revelation 2:13 only; his cult's literary trail (Andrew of Caesarea) begins after the c. 500 horizon.
