Who Denis of Paris was
First bishop of Paris, sent into Gaul — Gregory of Tours says — in the days of Decius, and beheaded on the hill of Montmartre, 'the mount of martyrs.' Gregory records him in Book I of the Histories among the seven bishops sent to found the Gaulish churches; the later legend that carried his own severed head to burial grew up around the abbey of Saint-Denis.
