Who Gregory (first of the name at Arles) was
One of the thirty-four bishops who signed the synodal letter the Council of Arles sent to Sylvester of Rome on 1 August 314 — the first council of the whole Western church, called by Constantine to settle the Donatist appeal. The letter names him; it does not give his see, and no other ancient source recovers it. Recorded here as ‘see unassigned in the acta’ rather than guessed at. Two men called Gregory subscribe the same letter, one early in the list and one late. They are two different signatories and the archive numbers them apart rather than collapsing them.
