Who Pontius the Deacon was

Cyprian’s deacon, who shared his bishop’s exile in the Valerian persecution and afterward wrote the Life of Cyprian — the earliest Christian biography of an individual, prefixed to the Acts of his martyrdom. Pontius means his Life to answer the pagans who had lives of philosophers: here is a churchman worthy of the same honour, “a teacher fitted by God both to instruct by his words and to prove by his death.” Modest about himself, he preserved the intimate detail no transcript could — the manner of the man. With him Christian biography begins.
