Who Fructuosus of Tarragona was
Bishop of Tarragona in Spain, burned alive in the amphitheatre with his deacons Augurius and Eulogius under Valerian — the earliest documented martyrdom of the Spanish church, its Acts among the most reliable of the age. Offered a drink before death, he refused, keeping the day’s fast; on the pyre, when a lector offered to loosen his sandals, he answered that he would remove them himself. Augustine preached on his feast, and Prudentius sang him. A bishop of the far West drawn into the empire-wide sweep of the Valerian terror.
