The Apostolic Age
Who Hermogenes was
Named with Phygelus among “all they which are in Asia” who turned away from the imprisoned apostle. The second-century Acts of Paul and Thecla elaborates him into a hypocritical companion “full of dissimulation” — legend, but early legend, showing how the bare verse was already being read. Distinct from the later heretic Hermogenes whom Tertullian answered.
