Who Verus the Presbyter was
Named in a Damasan epigram at Commodilla as the presbyter who, at the pope’s command, arranged and adorned the martyrs’ tomb. He is the named agent of the monumentalising programme that turned the Roman catacombs into shrines — the man who did the work Damasus ordered. Distinct from Verus the Arles subscriber and from Verus the vicarius of Africa.
Named once, in a verse epigram Damasus of Rome set at the tomb between 366 and 384. The epigram is the ONLY early evidence — the later Passions derive from it, not the reverse.
